Tokusatsu rocks and here’s the Archive to prove it

Tokusatsu is a weird thing, you either know what it is and love it or you don’t know what is and you don’t understand it, there is no middle ground. Luckily for me I’m able to get how awesome Tokusatsu is and why it is. To those that don’t know what Tokusatsu is well imagine silly things being done in a way that is cool if you forget that it’s a silly thing. This doesn’t mean it can’t be well written or dramatic. Tokusatsu means special effects and can mean from anything like Godzilla to Super Sentai which is what Power Rangers is based off. I was able to get into the Power Rangers fad as it had just begun since I loved dinosaurs already which lead me to being an early adopter before it hit it huge. I loved them until they stopped airing episodes where I lived. It wasn’t until many years later that I re-discovered them and realized they were still as awesome as they had ever been and I’m still a fan today.

Lord Drakkon has been making a lot of buzz in the Power Rangers fandom since his debut. I’ve got to admit that I wasn’t interested in the Boom! Studios comics since they seemed fanfic level and this DeviantArt Original Character DO NOT STEAL Green Ranger & White Ranger hybrid didn’t help change my opinion. This slowly changed over time and now I can point out why Lord Drakkon is such a cool character that deserves to be in proper Power Rangers Universe continuity.

Now, I haven’t read the comics and don’t plan to for the time being until enough story story arcs are easily available since I have no patience for monthly comics most of the time. Luckily this video narrated by Jason David Frank aka Tommy Oliver himself narrate who this character is does a much better description. You might be asking why I’d be a fan of a character that I don’t even really know and it’s because of this viral marketing.

Mighty Morphin’ Alien Rangers – the mini Power Rangers side spin-off season

Looking back on..

During the final season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers near the end we got a new intro and a new set of heroes as the main cast had been transformed to children, that it really was is that they wanted to use the cheaper Japanese footage they had available and therefore created this mini-series.

I don’t remember much as a kid what I thought of it but it was definitely a radical change. In hindsight I think it’s awesome they incorporated the Sentai footage of the suits into the show by having them be Rangers from another planet; Something that has happened a few times since but those are not Alien Rangers, figure that out. The logo is the only one on all the seasons that breaks the mold which makes people with slight OCD like me crazy. Really odd that they’re called Alien Rangers as if its their official name and another thing to bring out your OCD is that its the only ranger team that isn’t “Power Rangers” but “Alien Rangers”. This is gladly fixed in Power Rangers Zeo where they are called The Alien Power Rangers fixing my biggest yet stupid issue that i have.

Looking back on..

Last week we finished the last season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers which is a direct lead to Power Rangers Zeo. As you know Saban decided to change the format of Power Rangers with the fourth season and decided to follow the yearly sentai theme more closely and not only changing villains and mecha but also the suits. So let’s take a look at everything that the last season built up and if it delivered.

Before Zeo even began they aired some shorts leading up to the premier which is called “the Zeo Serial” which all the short together make another “episode” and it’s cool; This never aired where I lived but it would’ve gotten me super excited in fact as a kid I probably thought Power Rangers was cancelled as it got taken off the air after Season 3. I did find out about the other seasons not long after and even got to see a little of Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo but for the most part the franchise was dead in my area. Dragon Ball and Video Games kept me from being too sad about it though and I moved on. The Zeo serial works fine I don’t know why the fandom mentions that it’s non-canon because of A Zeo beginning, it can still fit, I mean what’s Power Rangers without a few retcons?

Power Rangers 2017 movie was a decent reboot

Looking back on..

For the longest time I waited for a new Power Rangers movie, while other franchises that became forgotten or lame they were all brought back thanks to nostalgia but it seemed Power Rangers could never catch a break. We finally got an announcement, I was hyped, but then the first reveal shots of the suits didn’t really set the world on fire and yet the trailer looked like it had potential. The final marketing push got me uninterested in the movie and since I was a bit busy at the time I didn’t get to watch it on theaters but no matter what it seemed like Power Rangers was finally cool again. So, now that the movie hype is gone how does it fare? It was liked by people but didn’t do so well at the box office and it has an uncertain future.

I’ll get straight to the point at first and say that overall the movie was not bad, not excellent but good. I didn’t know what to expect going in, almost all the stuff that came out before the movie such as suit designs and whatnot didn’t seem to be what I wanted but people seemed to like it and the first trailer piqued my interest. The movie is just all over the place and doesn’t exactly seems to know what it wants to be; it also does a lot of really new things that most superhero films don’t do and I applaud that but I can’t say all of them worked. So while ther are things in there that make me want to love the film.

I’m a big fan of X-Mas songs but since most of my favorites are the usual suspects that you’ll hear a thousand times in stores by the time the season is over I thought I’d do something a little different. Today we feature three X-Mas songs that were featured in different Christmas specials so at least these are different interpretations from the usual classics and they have cool music videos to along with them as well. So, let’s listen and watch 3 of MiscRave’s X-Mas playlist.

Grace Jones – The Little Drummer Boy – Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special

The oddest song in this odd X-Mas special by Pee-Wee Herman, the performance by Grace Jones is absolutely fantastic. You can tell just how much artistic fortitude just oozes out of her every movement even when she’s in Pee-Wee Herman’s flippin’ Playhouse. I especially love it when Pee-Wee starts dancing like an idiot and Grace Jones just goes along with it. Her outfit is not very Christmassy in fact she takes her winter jacker and gloves and dances in this weird plastic body suit that makes you question if it’s even appropriate for the children watching and yet mesmerizing at the same time, a must watch performance every X-Mas at MiscRave.
