Miitomo Life & History: Nintendo bring it back

Nintendo shocked the world when they announced that they would begin developing mobile games on iOS and Android since they had been against it for many years. Many people claimed it was the end of Nintendo even though people always complained Nintendo’s games weren’t on mobile. Miitomo was Nintendo’s first game that they released for smartphones and tablets, this was not what most people expected since they wanted one of Nintendo’s better known franchises like Mario. But Mii’s are what captured the heart of the mainstream audience so was it really a bad idea to launch with it?

People were not happy at the announcement since they were not getting an actual game but some weird social app and we all have enough social apps on our mobile devices to add another one but still this was Nintendo’s first swing at it so many checked it out. What we got was something that most people played around with in the beginning but quickly uninstalled and only a select few stayed around with it. However as months passed more and more people dropped the app, including me. I actually lasted quite a bit but as much as I want to love it there are just some problems with Miitomo.

Nintendo might be license happy now granting many of their properties to different companies to develop shows, toys and movies but before they were so liberal with their IP’s after the failure of the Wii U they had actually been extremely strict with them after the early 90’s.

We’ve recently read rumors of Nintendo looking to license The Legend of Zelda for a movie but this isn’t the first time studios have been interested. Back in 2007 there was a failed pitch by Imagi, the studio that brought us the fourth Ninja Turtles movie. Unlike the Gatchaman CG movie which never got made this one never actually even began official production but we can take a look at the video that was used to pitch the movie.

As a kid with such software available to my hands as Napster and a love for Nintendo, it didn’t take long for one of the terms I searched for would be “Zelda” and sure enough I was able to find something. Zelda Rap by 5-3 Federation. I downloaded it and after 20 minutes or so I got to listen to it.

The rap uses the original The Legend of Zelda intro as the beats as he raps about the game and making random geeky references. This was more than a decade from when geek culture was “cool” so it really was done for the passion for the game. There are tons of zelda raps now but this is the original and if you ask what an odd choice well remember that the original commercial had a zelda rap, though I guess that would make it the original, nevertheless check it out:

Gaming Again

Today is the release of a new Nintendo console, and a new launch doesn’t happen too often so what better way to celebrate it than by going back and remembering the previous Nintendo home console launches similar to how I did it for Pokemon.

I have been a part of every Nintendo Console and the launch of pretty much all of them: The Nintendo Entertainment System, The Super NES, the Nintendo 64, the Gamecube, the Wii, the Wii U, the Nintendo Switch and soon the Nintendo Switch 2. So let’s begin with my first Nintendo home console that I got as I was just a wee little lad.

Like with the Wii U, I really want to be excited but I just can’t find it in me to make it worth it and there are plenty of reasons why. I love Nintendo and have stopped myself from ordering it 3 times now.

Today is Pokemon Day, I guess because it’s when the games originally launched in Japan but instead of celebrating every other anniversary or just a reminder every year The Pokemon Company decided to get all the benefits of hashtags on Social Media and while you do that you can also check out our other Pokemon articles.

I mean they really went all out with it even paying Facebook to ask us what our memories about Pokemon for the 20th anniversary on the first “Pokemon Day”. But in honor of this purely marketing holiday that got someone a nice vacation bonus I decided to go back and go through memory lane on my first impressions of Pokemon games as they launched to the best of my ability. These aren’t my general thoughts on each gen but rather a blotter of the events and my first impressions of them.
