One day I”m cleaning the garage and I find my old The Nightmare Before Christmas Burger King watch I got as a child, I was in High School now and I needed a watch and I thought it was perfect and it was since many seemed to like it. It was only about a year later that the nightmare before christmas nostalgia hit and we had tons of new merchandise everywhere and now everyone had TNBC related stuff and it wasn’t as much fun wearing my Burger King watch.
This brought a full revival of licensing to the franchise which it hadn’t seen since it came out in 1993 and believe me Hot Topic could not be any happier making it a staple of their store. This wave continued and Disney decided to cover all the songs from the movie with modern bands for the 15th anniversary. I guess they thought the music lovers that shopped at Hot Topic would be interested and the whole idea is awesome and I’m so glad it happened. I’m also surprised that they were ok with the brand being associated with such acts like Marilyn Manson and Korn, the others were safer popular picks like the All-American Rejects or Amy Lee of Evanescence but half of the bands I don’t even recognize, I guess it’s not that easy finding 20+ popular acts to cover your songs.
Now the covers in general vary in quality but overall most if not all of them are inferior to the originals. Even the artists that you expect more from end up falling flat, that’s not to say it’s all terrible since it’s interesting to hear other interpretations of the songs they just don’t mesh as well. My favorite song from the movie is “What’s This?” and Flyleaf’s take on the song is fairly good even if it again doesn’t match the original. If you’re a fan of the movie soundtrack then there’s no reason not to check it out and see how it came out but besides that I can’t say it’s genuinely good.
