Lord Drakkon has been making a lot of buzz in the Power Rangers fandom since his debut. I’ve got to admit that I wasn’t interested in the Boom! Studios comics since they seemed fanfic level and this DeviantArt Original Character DO NOT STEAL Green Ranger & White Ranger hybrid didn’t help change my opinion. This slowly changed over time and now I can point out why Lord Drakkon is such a cool character that deserves to be in proper Power Rangers Universe continuity.
Now, I haven’t read the comics and don’t plan to for the time being until enough story story arcs are easily available since I have no patience for monthly comics most of the time. Luckily this video narrated by Jason David Frank aka Tommy Oliver himself narrate who this character is does a much better description. You might be asking why I’d be a fan of a character that I don’t even really know and it’s because of this viral marketing.
While that was cool and all, it just wasn’t something I wanted all that badly but I kept seeing Saban Brands market this character and even in the most successful mobile Power Rangers game Legacy Wars they made a big fuzz about him appearing. The music and intro just really sold the character and his Neon Genesis Evangelion inspired Zord the Black Dragon again with a narration indicating that this guy is a total bad ass.

All of this culminates with the mini-movie commercial for the Shattered Grid event in the comics which is just so awesome and has gotten so many people interested since it piqued their curiosity as to what they’re doing with the franchise. The actual video is quite good even if it does seem a bit low budget here and there but that’s fine for Power Rangers and they even got Amy Jo Johnson to record some lines for it. So while it seems like it’s only being done to make this event more popular and a marketing tactic, I do think there might be something a bit more going on and testing how fans and the public reacted to it.
We know JDF has talked about wanting a long time about having a solo Green Ranger PG-13 mini-series which was never going to happen but he is totally embracing this new character and wanting to do more with it as well. You also have Ron Wasserman who is hinting that this might lead to other things and if Saban really wants to do more with this idea then all this marketing could lead up to something besides the comic books. I mean Lord Drakkon even has a figure made by Bandai Exclusive for the Power Rnagers PowerMorphicon convention, so it’s no secret that they’re pushing the character to the fans.
Lord Drakkon could easily show up as a villain for a crossover episode like the ones we’ve seen in the past for Forever Red, Once A Ranger and Legendary Battle. He could also work as a season long villain and having him masked most of the time in case Jason David Frank can’t portray the character an entire season like he did back in Dino Thunder if they choose to go that route. If we got an actual mini-series dealing with some events similar to the comic then that would be even better but I don’t see it likely.
We’ve been able to see Lord Drakkon pop up in the Battle for the Grid video game with a storymode that is new but inspired by Shattered Grid so Lord Drakkon is here to stay. Yes I know we had an anniversary special with Lord Draven who is just a generic space alien and an evil Tommy who is just a robot and doesn’t do much since it’s only a 22 minute special Dimensions in Danger where as the title says it was also a multiverse crisis. It’ll be difficult to adapt Lord Drakkon when this special already did a very similar thing but it can be done.
No matter what happens it seems Lord Drakkon is a huge hit with Power Rangers fans and we’ll continue seeing more of him whether it’s in expanded universe material or just video game adaptations due to popular demand. If we do see Lord Drakkon ever make it to the proper Power Rangers Universe then we can rejoice that this gritty creatively bankrupt character at first sight had a lot more in him to set himself apart in the vast history of Power Rangers. All I know is Lord Drakkon gets the official MiscRave seal of approval despite my preconceived notion.
