Godzilla movies have been divided into the Showa, Heisei and Millenium era’s to help represent the series that the movie belonged to. While the Millenium series ended a while ago it seems with all the new Godzilla projects in the works we’ve reached a new era. Some fan sites are already calling it the Reboot series, but is this name really appropriate?
The only thing going for it is that all previous movies always referred to the original Gojira 1954 movie as being the first and this is the first film that doesn’t acknowledge those events but even then Godzilla has gone through a lot of reboots so more than anything it seemed like Godzilla was no longer a relevant franchise until now again so it’s more of a revival so until the reboot series is cemented into the fandom I’ll just refer to it as the Revival series which started with the American Godzilla by Legendary in 2014. Godzilla had a cartoon made in the late 70’s by Hanna-Barbera and well it’s umm..something. As a kid I loved Godzilla but whenever re-runs of this show aired on Cartoon Network I found it difficult to sit through. The show seems to have been made by people who didn’t know what Godzilla was and just used what they thought he was and went along with it. The characters or setting is never really explained you just know that you have some people on a ship who live with this creature called Godzooki that encounter monsters but Godzilla helps them out. Apparently the series bible explains this Godzooky, who is Godzilla’s nephew and he was in danger but the crew of the Calico saved his life and Godzilla protects the crew as a reward. I was seldom excited about the new Toho Godzilla film when it was announced last December; I mean we already had a Godzilla movie recently and even with this one coming from Japan but then I saw the trailer 6 months ago which changed my mind. I had already seen the Godzilla design from the leaks and I used to have mixed feelings about it but after watching the first teaser trailer I was sold. He looks terrifying and out of a horror movie and that’s great I mean I can’t think of a single movie where I legit thought Godzilla freaked me out and this trailer does that. The score also seems to be amazing from Persecution of the Masses to Who will know that just send chills down my spine. By now the movie may be old news but I’ll finally get to see it next month in theaters when it’s released. I haven’t really read spoilers or watched a lot of footage so I’ll be surprised. Shin Godzilla Resurgence or whatever you want to call it with this teaser literally made Godzilla scary again. Continue reading Making Godzilla Scary Again→
So as I started with Marvel and DC but now let’s go over the other Cinematic Universes currently in development. As I mentioned before the concept of a Shared Universe is nothing new however it’s become popular thanks to the way Marvel Studios had hit after hit in their Cinematic Universe. I won’t look at the history of shared universes as that would likely mean going back to Homer’s The Iliad and Odyssey but we’ll at least give a brief glimpse as we see the new Cinematic Universes previous history in a shared Universe.
