When The Super Mario Bros movie sequel was revealed to be called Super Mario Galaxy movie; It was easy to think that they were moving way too fast. They could really come out with another movie with Yoshi and other game material before going to Galaxy. But the movie in a way already feels like a greatest hits of different Mario adventures, similar to how the first movie included references to Donkey Kong arcade, Mario Kart and others.

With that said this movie is indeed not about Super Mario Galaxy and it’s indeed fast but that’s alright. In a way I find those positives, the movie was just a lot of fun to go through. Galaxy is not the epic story people make it out to be although I do agree it should’ve been the idea for the third movie. I feel there was enough content here to separate it into two movies. Yoshi alone showed so much potential to build a whole movie around him. Remove all the space stuff in here and you would’ve had a great sequel.

With that said, the movie does go from scene to scene with little breathing room, although that isn’t too different from the first although perhaps a bit more. I don’t think they overdid the easter eggs, after all Super Mario at this time was 40 years worth of world building in the games. To most people, those are just random characters even if we know the background to most of those things shown. I would indeed have tightened the plot a bit more but overall I was satisfied with everything they gave us.

After complaining about licensed music, I do think perhaps it wasn’t as bad as I thought, it does help break scenes down so I wish they hadn’t cut down on it so much here. A middle ground perhaps. The bowser arc was nice and I enjoyed having depressed Lumalee back. The post credits scene was nice enough. I do need to say I surprisingly enjoyed the Baby Mario Luigi scenes most didn’t. It’s also the first time we see Baby Toad, somehow wouldn’ t mind him appearing in the next Mario spin-offs. I always thought Rosalina was Peach’s mother so the revelation here was surprising but I’m fine with it.

Now I have to talk about Star Fox.. I felt he was there for a bit too long, but that’s mostly since this is a Super Mario movie. I loved every scene with him and made me want a Star Fox movie or show badly. He was handled really well and perhaps if he had only been there in a shorter cameo instead of an actual role in the movie people would not have rubbed people the wrong way.

The movie shows how much potential the Mario universe on the big screen really is. I think there’s plenty of ways they can go around for a third movie. Glad we did get to visit Brooklyn for a bit and I hope we see more of that in the future. I genuinelly laughed.
