When I first heard of a live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie I thought it was the worst idea for the franchise. It was just not something that could work. When we finally got a trailer…it seemed fine. Nothing particularly great or bad. Yet the internet went crazy. Sonic got a redesign and now it’s a successful movie franchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog the movie
Movie begins..Hates muschrooms, weird owl origin, this movie is its own thing. I do like the fanart meme Sonic being referenced. Here we have a Sonic X type origin and now Sonic lives on Earth. You can tell it’s very much a unique universe though, it’s very much not like the games. I do like the Echidna references and I guess we might as well call the original planet Mobius.
I have to admit I always liked the original ugly Sonic design. It seemed like a live action realistic cartoony hedgehog, not unlike when it’s been done for other cartoon characters in live action movies. Here comes the hiphopcracy of the fans. They loved the movie, but had we gotten the exact same movie with ugly Sonic..people would’ve said the movie sucked. We know for a fact none of the movie was really changed, just a cosmetic design.
Jim Carrey and Robotnik being Eggman’s name makes it feel like it’s a a 90s movie made in the 2010s. Great Eggman even if not fat. It’s fun and interesting. Tom is better than Chris Throndyke, in fact it makes the whole real Earth concept work better. Fun style, comedy. Even with all the libreties it takes, I like it
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
This movie is even more original..feels like a sequel. Longclaw…I like the new lore…but a downgrade from the original in every way. At what point would this movie be considred a CG film instead of live action? There’s not much live action and when there is, it just isn’t interesting at all.
Knuckles is good enough. Tail’s isn’t as good as he should be but he’s fine. I think the movie needed less Knuckles. Tails on the other hand should feel more like a friend on a fun adventure. Perhaps Knuckles should’ve been used as more of a mystery until the end and focused more on Tails. The movie is rather basic, nothing bad but not as f un as the first one. It odes feel like a 2000s movie with modern sensing. I lloved the ending of both movies pixel recreations of the film.
Knuckles
This 6 episode miniseries is basically the length of a movie. So you can think of it as one. I do love the knuckles hat from the OAV and the origin it gets. This show is compltely proposperous. It’s ridiculous and it’s better because of it. You have the consoomer nostalgia loser as the main human buddy to knuckles. Knux with ridiculous attitude and it works. It flows well like a movie and a better one than the second. It even features the Sonic cast in the beginning of the movie.
The theme is no good. I do like the references ot 2000s rock being old. Also like the deadbeat abandoning father done gracefully in a kid’s movie. It’s a lot of fun but drags towards the end. It needed some villain that was more memorable, they could’ve gotten some obscure Game villain, or even someone like Chaos or just metal Sonic, the Chaotix, a Swatbot. Something besides the generic mech. I mean they canonized the Chilli dog, why not reference the classic Western Sega Sonic lore.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Adapting Adventure 2, a great great game. It features Shaodow the Hedgehog in his full ow the edge angsty fashion with a gun. Love the way they incorporated some references like the Chao Garden in Japan, the Detective Pikachu joke and running Eggman. I like how Dr. Eggman is also fatter now and some of the recreation of the games bits even if there’s only a few of them. Knuckles not believing in friendly ghosts watching the 90s Casper movie is a favorite scene of mine. Gerald Robotnik was fine though didn’t love him, Jim Carrey carried the idea of the grandfather here, but hey, they know French. Super Sonic being needed to just fight Shadow feels odd and that’s a werid Knuckles Show quick easter egg they gave us. Overall the movie is cheesier like some kids movies tend to get in sequels but it fits the tone.
During the middle part of the movie like the previous ones it seems to get a bit slow, and the ending battle is not as epic or great as I’d like. The fights become a bit silly, this super Sonic fighting is not the best. Overall it’s not as great as people made it out to be, it’s just the second best movie after the first one. I absolutely loved the early 3D Sega Saturn looking Sonic in the credits.
