Americanizing Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon was Americanized and this American version influenced Sailor Moon worldwide, including Japan. What started as a small appendix while talking about the American Sailor Moon Cartoon pilot..turned out to be expanded into its own article with just the influence of bringing Sailor Moon to the USA lead to massive influence worldwide even bigger than any it ever had in the US.

Sailor Moon’s original 90s English dub might be ridiculed now and seen as a failure, but it clearly had an influence as tons of people knew what Sailor Moon was and basically every season got aired in some form or fashion except for the last. But now let’s talk about the influences it had around the world. Let’s talk the logo, while it can be argued it’s the International Logo that was created for the franchise and not necessarily made for the US market only, it is the logo that first appeared here and was shown worldwide.

Sailor Moon was huge in Mexico and other countries in Latin America, how is this relevant? While they were given the japanese video and audio, they were also handed the Cloverway scripts. How is that relevant? Well unlike the US and Canada were the DIC did not have a huge impact, on many latam countries it was indeed a huge hit with boys and girls and the anime would get primetime slots. They aired every season uncensored however some parts of the american scripts remained. Most specifically the dub names for the characters. You have Serena, Lita, Mina, Rei, Amy. These are the names they stuck with for the entire series and how millions grew up with them and will never get used to the Japanese names. The mangas that were translated also used the dub names.

All of this because of using the US masters, that lead to Darien being tuxedo mask just like other translated elements from DIC. Though not every single one since they did have the original footage to also translate from, but the violence and soundtrack was all kept in track unlike the DIC dub. But then perhaps it’s time to talk a bit more about those specific differences which are more well known. Everyone knows them as Sailor Scouts. Because well it’s all about Moon Power!

Hearing both the original DIC dub and the new Viz dub I can say the new dub is indeed better and yet feels like a 90s dub in quality, I mean that in a it’s kinda bad but fits well with this anime because of that. The Negaverse plays a huge role in the dub since well people dont’ die. Sailor Moon has a second secret identity since she’s the princess here.d Censorship is there hiding silhouettes, anything deemed too sexy and just blood overall, oh and death of course.

Sailor Says is Cheesy but I like how they incorporate the episodes. Sailor Moon Says see ya! I mean they’re random, some good ones too about school life, bullemia, some recap episodes well, some are a bit more random only taking a small part of the episode and go from there, others just go their own way. Some take it lighter and some a bit more important topics. We get ecology segemnts which are good. WOrks well with the Slice of Life the original show is. It’s cheesy but good.

Turning a gay man into a woman? This was done a couple of times and honestly I think it was mostly handled well, and I think it worked. Having a negaforce ddoes kina make things make sense at first. Zoycite is just better as a waifu IMO. Now Kissing cousins is another thing. But enough about that, isn’t it funny how people now prefer the bad masters with the pink tint even if that’s not how it aired? well at least not in most of the world. It’s mostly a loud minority comnplainign and while the pink tint does fit in a way it’s in no way superior.

The intro opening was done very well, it’s an interpretation of the original theme with new lyrics but while not superior it actually feels likme Sailor Moon. A good interpretation at that, it uses stock footage from the show, sometimes with spoilers and it is sometimes paired well and sometimes feels a bit odd and a couple of outright psoilers. The vignettes and transitions are great and feel very 90s which go perfect with the show. The outro is just a static part of the japanese outro with the intro in a small corner playing again.

The Commercials were great marketing, they have live action girl sailor moon, you can understand how it was a big deal and how even if cancelled it was able to make an impact with lots of people. I personally love some of the just not Sailor Moon stuff like the Sailor Moon Dream house.
