Boy meets world was a very popular show so people were excited that a sequel series was announced. It came and went and people forgot about it and the few who watched it didn’t seem to like it, or outright hate it. I was wary to watch it but I needed to be a completist and I was pleasently surprised. I think a lot of the hate is people forget who the target audience was and it’s basically the same target audience that the original show was. It does feel like it takes influence from other Disney shows like say Lizzie Mcguire I guess but overall it feels like part of the franchise and it even has more than plenty of returning characters to keep things interesting for old fans. The intro of the show is long and not bad, nice in the age of introless shows.
First thing you’ll notice is Cory’s nose, what the heck happened, the thing is..its just way too distracting. It took me more than one season before his nose stopped bothering me so much. Topanga on the other hand smiles too much even when angry, it’s like she has no other expressions and feels like she’s fake smiling even when she’s clearly not meant to be. I do think she looks beautiful still. Girl Meets World about Cory and Topanga’s daughter works great as a Boy Meets World sequel and what happens after the old show. It doesn’t ruin “continuity” any more than the original show did.
season 1 introduced the new characters and they’re mostly alright, there’s some stand out ones and some that just are kinda there. It’s always fun when you see old characters return and it’s often enough. I dont get the hate. The show is nothing amazing but neither was Boy Meets World. I’d enjoy this season al ot more if I was the target audience. Farkle finally shows the potential that the Minkus character really had Riley as Cory’s daughter works great, she’s him but at the same time she has her own little bits of personality so she can be fun. Maya is the rebellious person but also very different and more sarcastic than Sean. So they’re similar in a way but different enough. Many of the characters seem like remixes of older characters from Boy Meets World but as I said different enough to feel fresh. Not the crush Lucas, he was always boring.
Season 2 continues with everything conviniently happening in New York, like the old cast which we see plenty of. I can’t say all the returns are graet but for the most part they work. The Sean / Katy storyline works really well. The over the top acting of Riley and Maya also works since they feel like kids from Gen Z. SOme of the wooden bizarre acting works really well, I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but I believe it was. Soem of the odd returns I don’t love like how convinient they jsut happen to be in NY. This is the longest season and it shows since things get a bit stretched. The forced comebacks are too random and not natural. Lucas’arc is way too long and doesn’t work, the love triangle can work but it doesn’t ehre, season should’ve been shorter. The new random friends introduced in this seasona nd next don’t work as well.
Season 3 has Cory’s nose being less damaging, which I do like teacher Cory, it gets him tons of screentime on what isn’t his show anymore and it’s nice since it doesn’t take away form Riley being the main character. It’s sad Mr. Feeny wasnt used more, he was always great when he appeared. Topanga on the other hand doesnt get enough attention and is bland, jsut smiling. When she does get a bigger role however she can be interesting so it’s a shame she didn’t get more, her smile took all that space. Zay the black guy gets a joke that they don’t know his name which was funny since I didn’t. The love triangle was never really resolved well, and this season doesn’t change the format too much even if now they’re in High School The Seaon dad arc works well. Ava and the brother are not as fun as they start getting older which they were highlights in the first season. Farkle was not as fun in this season, they took some of his spark away by making him too nice.
The seasons always end with a new years or Christmas episode which brings up the question of did allt he episodes only take place int he fall smester? That doesn’t make sense, we dont see anything from the spring semester? The timeline doesn’t make much sesne here either. I enjoyed the nerd girl who joins later but then again she never really gets enough attention and can’t recall her name either..Mackle was not great as a recurring cast member. I liked the Young Riley/Maya episode but I don’t know why they kept using them later on. Teenage Maya fighting TOpanga was fun though, the show needed more teen angst to save the show. I would’ve enjoyed another season or two of this show just to see them grow like the original show allowed them to.
The finale was fine even if it’s basically just fan service for long time fans so yes, Girl Meets World is a neat Boy Meets World sequel, it works like that as its own show well enough and as a continuation to the storylines. We’ll likely never see any other reunion so this was a nice enough send off.
