I was browsing shows and saw Rayman with a weird title of Captain Laserhawk A Blood Dragon Vibe Remix. I had not heard of this so I quickly googled it and saw it had been an animated show that came out with a bunch of Ubisoft franchises together. I thought it could be good so I put it on the “watch list” where it rotted for a long while and didn’t seem like I’d ever watch it. One night I eventually did watch an episode and realized I had been missing out on one of the best video game cartoons that have been made.
I’m not big into Ubisoft franchises, so I’m only seldom familiar with some of the characters. You have either the characters or some version of Captain Dolph Laserhawk, Sarah Fisher Sigma, Bullfrog, Alex Taylor, Rayman, Marcus Holloway, Sam Fisher, Red, Jade, Pey’k, Pagan Min from games like Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed, Rayman, The Crew, Rainbow Six, Beyond good and Evil, Rabbids kaiju, etc. You even have some pro-wrestlers with Cody Rhodes and Kenny Omega. I have to admit if I liked some of those games more than I do I would’ve enjoyed this show a lot more.
With that said, this show is insane and I love it. It’s some alternate history set in the 90s in a world called Eden. And in many ways even if they don’t go to videoland, it’s basically a modern take of Captain N the game master. It feels like a video game cross over show and you can tell it was made with passion. Not all characters that show up are in character but it works out. There’s an in story reason for all the anthropomorphics running around the world.
Overall the story is a bit of a Suicide Squad style set up and it’s fun to see all the twists and turns. There are a lot of deaths and sadly some great characters die early one. Then again it’s such a short series it goes by very fast. It’s very violent and adult overall with a lot of swear words. That’s not something I expected given some of the art that you see of it.
What really sells the show is that it’s full of style, and that makes it a fun watch. I could only wish a show like this from a company whose characters I liked more so I would be more invested. But hey, give me some more of that darksynth and I’ll watch all the Ubisoft they throw at me. Sadly this wasn’t a huge success and we didn’t get any other seasons.
It did a good job that now I want to check out some of those franchises to see if I can like more the show. Sadly the target audience of Ubisoft games likely is not interested in this type of media. This is better than a love death robots rip off could offer. Apparently there was an NFT Crypto game but that’s long dead. But that’s all there is to the legacy of this show besides the actual series.
