The infamous Street Fighter live action 1994 movie has gone through a lot of opinions over the decades. Originally as the posterboy for why Video Game movies sucked, to a so bad it’s good. I actually have gone through similar opinions as I’ve watched it through different stages in my life. From hating it, to liking it, to understanding it while accepting it’s not good. This is not as well known but it actually has a subtitle for some markets which is The Ultimate Battle.
The film starts runnign with a lot of action, Guile is very distracting as Guile, not that the other characters are better but it just sounds off, but also just feels so 90s. Quickly you realize they do not undrestand the franchise. You are put in context that there is a full out war against M. Bison and the Allied Nations , it’s so hammy and being played straight, and it’s actually where it shines because of it. But man, the choices are just all over the place, it’s a joke to Street Fighter.

As a kid I was so excitred to watch this only to be so disappointed. When I rewatched it as a late teen, I was very entertained by the whole thing. It’s a messy movie, not as so bad it’s good as i remembered it, also not horrible, it just is. You just have to accept this is a military movie that has street fighters as its characters and the movie flows better that way. Having Guile being the main hero is just not a great choice, especially since they made Ryu and Ken be so forgettable. Other characters are handled relatively fine even if not given enough character, or differing a bit from their game counterparts like Chun-Li, Cammy, and even Honda and Zangief. The two that really get the worst treatmeant is Charile being Blanka and Dhalsim.

The movie just slows down in the middle even if it ramps up towards the end, and we get more fights. They tried to make this tournament fighting game into something realistic and failed at it but gave us a few instances of gold moments. For a moment, you can almost feel like this specific version makes sense in a GI Joe type of world. This only makes the GI Joe toy line make somewhat more sense, it’s not street fighter but they lucked out in having a movie that made their toys logical.

The movie actually has an ending where Bison is not dead and restarts his plans, this actually works well for the Street Fighter cartoon which is a direct sequel to this movie. But if you want some further lore for this gem there’s also street fighter the game, and there’s actually 2 of them. The Arcade and console versions are different, they feature different backgrounds, and character sprites were digitized different giving them different appearances.

The arcade version playing like a faster version of Mortal Kombat with Street Fighter moves and the console one that plays like a clunky realistic version of Super Street Fighter II. But you do get a bit more of an expanded story through their endings, both games feature different endings but they’re similar enough that for the most part they even build upon and complement each other. They can all basically be canon except for M. Bison actually winning, since all the other ones just take BIson’s defeat into account.

The game features Akuma just randomly being in the background of the events, no real story, so it works. We have Sawada in the game who is the original character for the movie who gets plenty of screentime in the movie. Fei Long appears in the background which are all heavily inspired by Mortal Kombat stages, and it’s cool to see a grittier Street Fighter universe. Blade is dressed a generic grunt who is actually Guiles brother, who beocmes a wrestler referencing the extended game lore. There are Bison trooper palette swaps as well Arcane (Blue), Kkyber (yellow), F7 (Black). Cool to see Cammy in her actual outfit.
This is my little tribute to the movie,
