I have to admit I liked Bring Me To Life as it played everywhere as it was used to promote the Daredevil movie. Coming from Arkansas as a christian band I sort of knew about them before that and was not interested but man was that song catchy. I was too much of an elitist mall goth to admit it so I always crapped on the band and never gave them a chance. To be fair it did seem a more watered down version of what I liked as I was moving into heavier stuff, not more radio friendly kind. So here is Fallen by Evanescence.
Going Under is a good album opener, decieving you into thinking this will be a perhaps heavier album with the opening riff. Surprised htis was the second single but it was the early 2000s so the masses were used to heavier singles. I was surprised when I first heard this song in the music video. Always disappointed by the less heavy parts of the song. Video is a a nice mix of “creepy” eyes on the audience and the band singing.
Bring me to life is catchy as fck, I thought of the band as Linkin Park with a female singer when I first heard it and of course I secrtly liked hte song. The video might not make too much sense if you really thinkn about what’s happening but if you don’t it’s actually a pretty great music video. No matter what Amy Lee might think 12 Stones helped make Evanescence what they are thanks to this song and deserve the credi tdespite being literally whos. I really like the scream as Amy Lee falls. Not many things say 2003 like this song does.
I never knew Everybody’s Fool had a music video, pretty sure i never saw this, I guess it wasn’t as big as the other singles in this album. Thena gain it sounds like a generic 2000s nu-metal band with Amy Lee singing so perhaps because of that. The music video feels very different more like a pop music video of a famous star not being happy.
My Immortal felt like that generic piano/acoustic song every heavy rock band felt the need to include and I disliked it for a long time. I’ve recently come around to it and have enjoyed it. I’d never seen the music video but the black & white motiff works fine. What can continue four singles in a row and well Haunted had big shoes to fill. It starts with that spooky gothic melody. And well to me it fills all the necessary check boxes for me to enjoy this song.
Tourniquete just kind of blends with the other songs. I’m sure I’ve heard other metal bands with a better song with that same title. Imaginary is another surprisngly heavy song. They really were more of a numetal band than just rock like I assumed they were. Not that it’s a great song. Taking Over Me follows this same trend. Hello on the other hand is a bit more on the radio friendly boring side. My Last Breath is not much better.
We end with Whisper and it’s an improvement and better way to end the album. Later printings had My Immortal Band Version as well as new cover art on the cd, well re-arranged cover art since it’s the same.
Overall the album is much better than I ever gave it credit for and they deserve some of the fame they got. They did get overplayed and likely weren’t as talented as their fame would make it seem. Nevertheless Amy Lee is a good vocalist and the band was a decent numetal radio rock friendly alternative to listen to.
