An anime that pays tribute to 90s gaming through the eyes of the gamer Uncle that went to another world and missed the evolution of modern gaming. If you want a show that gives you a fun comedic story to follow as they also reminisce over the 90s era of gaming, this is your go to anime.
Taking place in the year 2017 after being in a comma for 17 years since the year 2000. He tells the stories of how he learned this new language by being in another world and his niece Sumika monetizes this on YouTube. The fun is that he didn’t experience the change the last two decades of technology had done and how SEGA lost the console wars that he was a fanboy of.
It’s in. a way nostalgic for that classic era of video games like Hi Score girl but Sega themed. The Uncle Yousuke tells his stories of his isekai adventure while adapting to the modern world while also being an otaku. He has magical powers that he gained through his adventure in Granbahamal, because of course. As mentioned people don’t see his magic videos for different silly reasons which means it’s difficult for him to get money.
You get some great references from a bunch of games I wouldn’t have expected like Golden Axe, but also the classics like Sonic 2, Dragon Quest. He just does stuff that will bring a smile to your heart if you’ve ever done it, like buying stuff from auction sites, in his case mostly Sega related, including magazines, stuff about the Saturn and hey Guadian heroes.
You do see his adventures in the other world which is a fantasy MMO RPG type of place. He tells this stories of what happened to him and his quests there. HIs love for Sega is hilarious and I actually think they could’ve done more fan service. It can be a bit perky at times but in an original way and not the usual way. The whole looking back at what happened is done really well and is very funny. There is a lot of potential in the show but it’s not utilized as much as I’d like.
The 13 episode story of the anime is faithful and adapts until Volume 7 of the manga when it finally caught up to it. Since then we do have enough material to adapt a second season but there’s no evidence it will nor has the manga actually finished. Even so, it is a satisfying watch, there’s no epic arc you really must know everything about so even without an ending you do get a conclusion to the current arc and that’s good enough. The show needs something to be an all time classic but it gets so many things right.
