While Disney’s Jim Henson’s Sinclair Family Dinosaurs was popular enough to get a music CD, with Dinosaurs Big Songs, this was not all for the Sinclair’s family musical success. Upon some research the album was appareantly only translated in Spanish, however it was popular enough to get a second album by the Dinosaurs. So, yes, Big Songs got a sequel album called “La Fiesta released in Mexico and LatinAmerica. Let’s read a little more about this.
The original album Big Songs might’ve released around 1992 but it could’ve released later, I think the date might just be mentioning the US release date. The name is just a slang translation of the original English name which is Cancionzotas, which I guess could translate as Really big songs. While it mainly made for Mexico there’s evidence that it was released in the rest of LatinAmerica as well. Now I won’t spend too much time talking about this one since I already talked about the original and this one isn’t much different.
The fact that it’s mostly the same, it also means the album is not much better. The lyrics are slightly different since they need to match the tones and verses of the song melodies. However for the most part the songs are basically the same theme, just some details can be a bit different, they actually reference beer in this one. Unlike the English release, they use different voice actors from the show, which had a good dub. I guess this was done to ensure good singing voices but it makes it hard to tell who’s singing what song because of it, though the lyrics help figure that out easily. The baby is the closest voice out of all of them. Let’s take a look at the track list which is the same:
1 Dinosaurio Soy (Lo Que Quiera Puedo Hacer)
2 En Un Mundo Ideal
3 Yo Quiero Soy Rey
4 Mami Suegra
5 En La Edad De Piedra
6 Soy El Nene (Tú Me Quieres)
7 Con Sangre Fría Nací
8 Es Lagarto
9 Soy Flojo y Esclavo
10 Milenio Tras Milenio (Canción de Amor de Dinosaurios)
11 Y Serás Herbívoro
12 Dormido Estás
Dinosaurs
La Fiesta 1995
Dinosaurios La Fiesta or “The Party” is the second album that was made, it came out in 1995 when the show was still very popular in re-runs and still relatively “newish” show that was airing. They actually brought back the cast from the original CD so at least their consistent there even if the voices are different from the show. These are all original tracks since there was no album to localize, and because of that the lyrics and song themes are far more Tropicalized. This makes th elyrics less awkward and much better than Cancienzotas, the lyrics flow better and are more interesting. I’ll also argue that the songs are generally better than Big Songs. I mean it’s not an all time classic but still an upgrade. Don’t be fooled by the lackluster title and generic cover art, this is a gem for Dinosaur fans.
Some of the themes repeat from the previous album, almost like an inspired spiritual successor, or maybe there just arne’t too many different themes you can do with the tropes of these characters, I mean how many different ideas can you think of for a song involving Richfield. This album did get an official music video which aired on TV, although it’s nothing special since it’s all just stock clips. Below find a brief description of each song and translated name.
1 No…¡La Mamá “Not the Mama” – Earl narrating how The Baby treats him
2 La Dinosalsa – “The Dinosalsa” Charlene starts listening to salsa music and talks about it
3 Criaturas Al Ataque Creatures Attack – Earl is hungry at night and asks Fran for dinner but the creatures are all over the place since Earl forgot to close the fridge they are everywhere
4 El Nene Consentido – “The Spoiled Baby” which is the catchphrase of “I’m the Baby gotta love me” in Spanish they jsut call him the Nene Consentido. It’s like a remake of I’m the Baby, gotta love me, similar beat, similar chorus well at least to the Spanish edition of spoiled baby. It’s the single, a far more dance version, unsure if better to the original but more upbeat definitely, and just as catchy if not more.
5 Ven A Mi Casa A Jugar – “Come to my house and play” Another baby song saying he does what he wants
6 Serás Siempre Un Tonto – “You’ll always be a fool” Richfield singing about his workers being stupid
7 Las Lagartijas – “The Lizards” Baby sings about lizards and reptiles being great
8 Soy Un Buen Dino – “I’m a nice Dino” A Robbie song talking about how he’s a teenage dinosaur rebellious but good
9 Yo Soy Rockero – “I’m a rocker” Robbie sings about being a rocker and wanting to dance with a girl
10 Noche Buena…Navidad – “Christmas Eve…Christmas” An Xmas song because well Mexico likes the holiday. Fran, baby, earl, singing about the hokdays and Santa Claus is mentioned so he’s canon.
11 Nuestro Bebé – “Our Baby” Fran and Earl sing about what baby will be when he grows up..if only they knew their son’s fate in the finale
12 Vamos A Imaginar – |Let’s imagine” an appropriate song about taking care of planet earth, fits well with the environmental messages the show often had.
Honestly finding this information was so interesting. I couldn’t find any other international dubbed versions of Big Songs, let alone a sequel to them. It goes to show that err. The show was rather popular in Mexico and LatinAmerica, enough to bring over a lot of merchandise for it over and licensed goods.
